Vernon Sallack

Vernon W. Sallack, 97, of Johnsonburg Pa., died January 29, 2018 in Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Mary’s, Pennsylvania. His wife, the former Virginia Stolz, passed away November 17, 2000.

Vernon was born in Johnsonburg on October 2, 1920, the son of the late William and Rose Launer Sallack. He was a graduate of Johnsonburg Area High School and Thiel College, Greenville, Pa. He was a school teacher at the Johnsonburg Area High School for over 30 years. He taught math to the school’s students and also served as an informal advisor and counselor to many of them. Vernon was a member of the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Scranton while he and his wife resided in the Scranton area. He was also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #675. Before moving to the Scranton area in 1997, he had been a long time member of St John’s Lutheran Church, in Johnsonburg.

Vernon was an inspirational person who was kind and considerate to every person he met, whether at school, in the community, church, or other organizations. He always had a friendly and happy disposition and a willingness and sincere desire to help or assist others.

When Vernon was not teaching, he enjoyed gardening and home projects, traveling around the country, visiting family and friends, and working on his favorite hobby of model railroad trains.

Vernon will be deeply missed by the many people that he touched during his lifetime.

Surviving are cousins Shirley Steudler and Charlotte Knopic of Johnsonburg, Ruth Arnot of Toledo, Ohio and John Schueltz of State College, Pa. Also surviving are son-in-law Irwin Adler of Scranton and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, his daughter Donna Adler, a sister Eva Goodwin, and brothers Myles, Earl and John Sallack.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family and interment of Vernon’s and Virginia’s ashes will be in the McKean Memorial Park, Bradford, Pa. Arrangements have been entrusted to Corey Brian Strauch Services, LLC, funeral home location, 602 Birch Street, Scranton, PA 18505.
