Thomas E. Shoener, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Thursday evening at home. He and his wife, Bernice E. Darmofal Shoener, were married 66 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Vernon and Greta Davis Shoener, he was a 1966 graduate of the University of Scranton. After graduating he taught for two years in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., earned his master's degree, and then returned to teach social studies at Scranton Technical High School. He spent the next 32 years as a teacher and department chair at Tech and Scranton High School.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Darwin, and survived by a sister, Barbara Bzdickand husband John; and sister in law Mary Shoener.
Thomas leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, generosity and love. He is survived by four children, Attorney Thomas J. Shoener, Philadelphia; Donna Voldenberg and husband Frank, Scranton; Lisa Malia and husband Michael, Scranton; Matthew K. Shoener and wife Jenny, Moosic.
His children who, along with their families, gifted him the joy of being a doting grandfather to Maxwell Shoener, Amy Kordish and Richard Karwaski, Lauren Pierce and husband Ron, Jessica Conway and husband Shane, Kelsey Fallon and husband Michael, Christian Fiore and Clorissa Blankenship, Angelica Lutz and husband Jared, and Mikey, Jack, Joey and Tony Malia. In addition, Thomas leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren. His warmth and wisdom will forever live on in the hearts of the many lives he's touched.
Thomas was renowned for his great hugs that wrapped us in love and comfort. Each embrace carried a warmth that will be cherished in our hearts forever, a testament to the genuine affection he shared with family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the compassionate care they showed to Thomas.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Corey Brian Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch St., Scranton, Pa. 18505. Interment will follow in the Dunmore Cemetery. A viewing will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
