Jeanne M. Johnston Gavern, 89, longtime resident of Scranton, died Tuesday morning in Montrose at the home of her daughter. She was the widow of Nicholas Gavern, who died Jan. 23, 1998.
Born in Scranton daughter of the late William and Mary Bossert Johnston, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and attended Marywood College. She was the manager of the Gracie Farms Ice Cream store on Pittston Avenue in Scranton and later worked at Acme Markets. She was a member of the After 50 Club, the Red Hat Society, was an avid card player and enjoyed playing poker with the group at the Geneva House. She was a member of the former Nativity of Our Lord Church before her illness.
Surviving are a daughter, Janice Gavern, Montrose; two sons, Thomas Gavern and wife, Simona, Scranton; and Timothy Gavern and fiancée, Marissa Quiroz, Irwindale, Calif.; a sister, Marigrace Griffith, Binghamton, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Lisa Goodman, Montrose; and five nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in St. John Neumann Parish, Nativity of Our Lord Chapel, 633 Orchard St., Scranton, PA 18505. Interment to follow in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Friends are asked to go directly to church the morning of the funeral.
A visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Corey Brian Strauch Services LLC, funeral home location, 602 Birch St., Scranton.
