Jean Wentland Francis

Jean Wentland Francis, 91, a life long resident of South Scranton, died Saturday morning, November 14, 2015 at home. She is the widow of the late John R. Francis, who died November 19, 1965. The couple was married November 24, 1948.

Born in Scranton the daughter of the late Anthony E. and Gertrude E. Sikora Wentland, she was a 1941 graduate of Scranton Technical High School receiving the highest honors in the commercial course. She also briefly attended Lackawanna Business College. She was an instructor in the School of Accounting at the International Correspondence School. Later, she was the Secretary to Rev. Joseph Woods, Executive Director of the United Churches of Lackawanna; then was the office manager at Anthracite Optical Company. Lastly, for 22 years, until her retirement, she worked in the Scranton office of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Jean was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Scranton serving as Treasurer on the Church Council, a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Minnie Schaffer Ladies Bible Study. She was an avid reader, reading about 5 books a week, which she received from the Scranton Public Library’s “Books by Mail” Program.

Surviving are her sister and best friend Vivienne W. Yaggi, Scranton; a niece Candace Catalano, Sun City, AZ; several cousins and many good friends.

She was preceded in death by several aunts, uncles, cousins and her four royal furry friends Snoopy, Mitzi, Mollie and Ginger

The funeral and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
