Janice Owens Schmitt

Janice E. Owens Schmitt, of Lake Winola, died Friday, May 1st, 2015 at Abington Manor, Clark Summit. She is the widow of William “Bill” Herman Schmitt who died August 24, 2009. The couple was married 60 years.

Born in Scranton daughter of the late William and Alta Bronson Owens she was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, Keystone College and the Moses Taylor School of Medical Technology. At the time of her retirement she was employed by Moses Taylor hospital as the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory, where she had worked for 44 years. She was certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and a member of the Clinical Managers Association.

As a young girl she accepted Christ as her personal savior and for many years she served the lord in the North Main Ave Baptist Church as an organist, pianist, Sunday school teacher, youth advisor and during this time was also active in the Youth for Christ. Later she joined the Heritage Baptist Church and was a member for 40 years. She was active in bible studies and women’s minister there.

Her hobbies included handcrafts including knitting, crocheting, embroidery, tatting, quilting, oil painting, and reading. She taught English as a Second Language for many years mostly to Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese immigrants. The Scranton Council for Literacy Advance honored her with the founder’s award in recognition for the time, effort and faithful hours of service to her students.

She was a kind and loving person who will be missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday May 23 at 10:00AM in the Heritage Baptist Church, 415 Vernard Rd., S. Abington Twp., PA 18411. Friends may call from 9:00am until the time of services.
