Donald M. Kirchner

Donald M. Kirchner, Life long resident of Scranton, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016 in the VNA Hospice unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center, with his family by his side.

Born in Scranton son of the late Frank and Helen Iwanczeski Kirchner, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. After graduation he immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was trained as an Air policeman and served two years in Turkey and two years in Maine. After active duty, he remained a member of the Air Force Reserve, traveling to places such as Germany, England, the Azores, Spain, and Panama among other countries. Don was hired by the United States Postal Service where he worked more than twenty-five years, until he retired. Don attended evening classes at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

He is survived by his three children Donald Kirchner and wife Maura, Ann Walsh and husband Jerry, and Patricia Hein and husband Doug; five grandchildren Donald E., Sara and Mary Kirchner, Abigail and Kelsey Hein, his long time companion Marlene Gongliewski, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Frank and Robert Kirchner.

A visitation will be held Thursday from 4-7 pm in the Corey Brian Strauch Services, LLC, funeral home location, 602 Birch Street, Scranton, PA 18505.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10:00am in the Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1404 E. Elm Street, Scranton, PA 18505, to be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor.

Cremation took place in the Strauch Cremation Center and Crematory, Gouldsboro.
