Marie Gavern

Marie M. Gavern, 92, of Scranton died Thursday morning in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She is the widow of the late Nicholas J. Gavern Sr. who died in 2000. The couple was married 53 years.

Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late William and Angelina Angerson Pennella she was a graduate of Dunmore High School. Until her retirement she worked for Gold Star Manufacturing. She was a member of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, the Young at Heart Club and the Over Fifty Club.

Marie enjoyed cooking her family’s favorite foods and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In addition to spending time with her family, Marie loved to read, crochet, and play Po-ke-no and Bingo with her friends. Everyone who came in contact with her, immediately became part of her extended family.

The family would like to send their sincere thank you to Diane and Rachel with the ICU of Regional Hospital, along with the entire staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the special care she received.

Surviving are three daughters Patricia M. Miller, Lakeland, Fl, Sandra L. Thompson, Douglasville, Ga, Donna M. Holmes, Clark Summit; a son Nicholas Gavern Jr., Dickson City, nine grandchildren James Miller, Jr., Tina Wilson, Nicholas Gavern III, Cara Coleman, Alexandra Thompson, Victoria Thompson, Crane Holmes III, Sarah Holmes and Michaelina Holmes; nine great grandchildren Aidan Miller, Brady Miller, Mia Miller, Maddox Miller, Bailee Wilson, Ryder Wilson, Keaton Wilson, Braeden Coleman and Kya Coleman.

She was preceded in death by two sisters Rosemarie and Vincentina and two brothers Dominick and Vito.

A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at 11:30am in the St. Paul of the Cross Parish, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton, PA 18505. Interment to follow in the Italian American Cemetery, Scranton. Friends and family are asked to go directly to church for mass.

A visitation will be held Sunday from 2-5pm in the Corey Brian Strauch Services, LLC, funeral home location 602 Birch Street, Scranton, PA 18505.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes Barre, PA 18702

    Patty, Nick, Sandy and Donna, so sorry for your loss, my sisters and I thought the world of your mom and know she will be missed, dearly. She and our mom were such good friends and we have such wonderful memories of their times together.
