Lucille Urbanowicz

Lucille “Urban” Urbanowicz, 87, a long-time resident of Scranton, died Saturday morning in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She is the widow of the late John L. Urbanowicz, who died March 14, 2016. The couple was married 65 years.

Born in Upper Darby, Pa, the daughter of the late Wilhelm and Louise Daenemark Teufel, she moved to Scranton as a young girl. She graduated from Scranton Technical High School, class of 1946. She worked at PNC Bank for more than 25 years before retirement.

She was a member of the former Trinity United Church of Christ, where she served on the Church Council, Sunday School Board, Church Dinner Committee, and was a tour guide with the Trinity Travelers Bus Tours. She was a founding member and officer of the Lackawanna County German American Society and a member of the Waldorf German American Association. She continued to be active with the Scranton Technical High School Reunion Committee. She was an avid Penn State football fan (great tailgates) and a Penn State Men’s & Women’s volleyball supporter. She loved to travel extensively with her husband, especially to Germany and Alaska. Lucille closely followed her granddaughters’ activities in school, sports, and music. She was a great baker and could throw together a dinner party in the blink of an eye.

Lucille and her husband John enjoyed decorating their home on East Mountain for Easter for the joy of the community for more than 20 years. This event was covered by both television and print local news outlets and was even covered nationally by ABC on the Easter Sunday evening news.

Surviving are her daughter Dr. Cheryl Bessoir, Dunmore; three granddaughters: Ashley Pipe, Millheim, Amy and Abby Bessoir, Dunmore; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister Minnie Kuhn.

The funeral will be Friday at 10:00am in the Corey Brian Strauch Services, LLC, funeral home at 602 Birch Street, Scranton, PA 18505. Interment will follow in St. Stanislaus Polish National Cathedral Cemetery.

A viewing will be held Thursday from 5-7pm and Friday from 9-10am in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made payable to: East Mountain Residents’ Association (please mail directly to the funeral home at the address above). Plans are underway to use these funds to continue the Easter traditions on East Mountain in Lucille and John’s honor. To leave an online condolence please visit www.StrauchFuneralHomeScranton.com
