Irene Viola Travis McGurrin, 93, of Hatboro, formerly of Dunmore, died Sunday morning at her residence in Luther Park, Hatboro. She is the widow of the late Francis R. McGurrin.
Born in Olyphant, daughter of the late Joseph and Alice Snyder Travis, she was a graduate of Dunmore High School. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Cook Coffee Company. Irene served as a Red Cross nurse’s aide during World War II. Later in life, she volunteered helping disabled children. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and senior citizen’s group in Warrington, Pa. She was an avid bowler and loved playing cards. Irene was a doting grandmother, a devoted friend, a cherished neighbor, firm in her faith in God, and loved to entertain. She was generous with others and frugal with herself. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She was a fountain of common sense and a tower of self-reliance.
Surviving are her only son Michael F. McGurrin , his wife Gena E. Cadieux, and her only grandchild, Glenn S. C. McGurrin, all of Vienna, Va.; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom were precious to her.
In addition to her husband, Irene was preceded in death by her brothers Harry, Earl, Ells, Benjamin, and sister Alice Black.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 28th, 2015, at 11:00am in the Nativity Church of St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard Street, Scranton, PA 18505, to be celebrated by Father Lee Havey. Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church the morning of mass.
A viewing will be held Friday from 5-7 pm in the Corey Brian Strauch Services funeral home location, 602 Birch Street, Scranton, PA 18505; and Saturday from 10am until the start of mass in the church.
