Emil Marino

Emil J. Marino, 96, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Wednesday morning at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife, the former Wanda Malinowski, died June 5, 2001. The couple was married 55 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Ralph and Frances Noto Marino, he was educated in Scranton schools. He worked for Stipp Construction and served as operating engineer for 68 years with Local 542. He enjoyed swimming and taught many children to swim in the South Side Pool, where he was a life guard. He loved to fish at Meadow Lake, which he considered his stomping grounds. He was a great story teller, played the sax and loved to sing. He was a member of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church and a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, Scranton. His faith showed most with his devotion to the St. Ann’s Novena.
Surviving are three daughters, Frances Shumbres and husband, Lawrence, Jefferson Heights; Mary Anne Duffy-O’Brien and husband, Dennis, Scranton; and Constance Patrick and husband, Keith, Gainsville, Va.; grandchildren, Larina Kost and husband, Erwin; Lawrence Shumbres II and wife, Jodi; Steven Shumbres and wife, Erin; Paul “P.J.” Duffy and wife, Angela; Joseph Duffy and wife, Lindsey; Colleen Savage and husband, George; and Timothy Patrick; great-grandchildren, Erwin III, Oliva, Ari, Anna, Nathan, Jake, Cali and Claire.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Vincentina Noto; and brothers, Dr. Joseph, Angelo, Ralph Jr., Dr. Thomas and John Marino.
The funeral will be Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Corey Brian Strauch Services LLC, funeral home location, 602 Birch St., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Church of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton. Interment to follow in Sacred Hearts Cemetery, Scranton.
