Derek was an amazing person – kind, fun, creative, and caring. We met at Earth Bread + Brewery in Mt. Airy, and had some great times together when he lived in Philadelphia. Like The Love, his terrific hot sauce, Derek brought extraordinary flavor to every gathering. He held the most unique parties, was a master at getting the crowd to sing along at karaoke, and wrote some truly beautiful music. Most importantly, though, his son was the center of his world. He was one of the best Dads I’ve ever known.
When he decided he’d had enough of the city and wanted to go back to the woods, we helped him load up the truck once more, and parted with promises to keep in touch. The last time we saw him was in November 2016, when he came to the neighborhood to deliver hot sauce to his appreciative customers. Hanging out that night, it was as if no time had passed. After that, we heard from mutual friends that he had decided to get rid of his cell phone, and since we weren’t on social media, we weren’t able to contact him. We always hoped that he’d just pop up again one day, and we could pick up where we left off. He was that kind of friend. We’ll miss him always, now. Our sincerest condolences and love to his family, friends, and son. Derek was one in a million.
