Anthony Graves
Anthony Graves, a long time resident of Scranton, passed away Saturday February 4, 2023 at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton. He and his wife, Janet Schumacher Graves, had been married for 36 years.
Born in Killorgan, County Karry, Ireland, son of the late John and Margaret Graves, his childhood education provided a thirst for knowledge ands love of education. At age 18 he traveled to the United States for employment and to pursue his goal of a college education. He entered into the United States Air Force which he took great pride in. He then received in Bachelors and Master’s Degrees from the State University College of New York in Buffalo. He worked as an addictions counselor at various area facilities. His last position was primary counselor at Marworth a place dear to his heart. He also worked in private practice and was an adjunct professor at Luzerne Community College. He was a friend of Bill W. For over 40 years. Prior to his illness he and his wife visited Ireland and Paris on a second Honeymoon. The highlight of the trip for Tony was being able to visit Noterdame Cathedral on a Sunday during mass and spending the evenings at the many art galleries in Paris.
He loved old movies, photography, British drama series, talking to people, trips to Cape Cod, art history, education and most of all his beloved home land. As he became ill he enjoyed daily rides to Lackawanna State Park. He was an avid reader and would often read three books at a time. Shortly before he passed a catalog arrive with a t-shirt with the words “I read that’s what I do and I know things.” He said that’s me and Janet said Exactly!
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son Sean Graves; a daughter Tara Grambo; grandchildren Cody, Emily, Connor, Marissa and Michael; a sister Rita Curran, County Waterford Ireland and his constant furry companion Paddy.
He was preceded in death by a sister Margie Moore and a brother Tomas Graves.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Marie Schumacher, Mark and Susan Manly, Dave Whithers and his lunch buddy, Tony Kearney, for the support and care given to Tony during his lengthy illness. Tony was deeply loved and will be missed by many.

Tony’s wishes were that there will be no public viewing, funeral or memorial services. A private mass for the immediate family will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Corey Brian Strauch Funeral Home, Scranton.
